DEPARTMENTS

Today computers are used in many elementary school classrooms as everyday tools for the teaching and learning of various subjects.  The emphasis is not on programming, but on learning how students can create their own algorithmic solution, on understanding the kind of reasoning the computer is designed for, and on learning about the limitations and power of computers.

The intention of the subject at our school is that students should gain knowledge of the nature of information processing and the broad range of its applications, together with a general understanding of how an information processing system is designed to suit a particular application and how such a system works.

The syllabus concentrates on the principles of information processing so that, although students will study contemporary hardware, software and applications as examples, they should be well equipped to appreciate future developments in the technology and its applications. Computing is an applied subject and, to reinforce the practical aspects, all candidates are expected to use computers as a learning tool.

Aims of the subject

The aims of the curriculum for computer education are listed as follows. These are set out below and describe the educational purposes of a course in Computer Studies for the IGCSE examination.

The aims are to:

  • develop in students an appreciation of the range and power of computer applications.

  • foster an interest in, enjoyment of, and confidence in the use of computing.

  • develop students’ abilities to solve problems using computing techniques.

  • develop an awareness in students of the place of computing in society and issues computing raises in society.

  • provide students with a firm understanding of the basic techniques and knowledge required for computing applications.

  • foster a desire to use computers within other interests.

Computer Studies is an optional subject was introduced in the year 2006 in Form IV. Since then it has attracted more and more students each year. Computers play an active part in daily life and it is imperative that all persons performing simple to more complex jobs be computer literate.
